On November 24, the Children’s Hospital of Michigan, part of the Detroit Medical Center, placed the final steel beam during the topping out ceremony for the new critical care tower addition to the hospital. This milestone marks the completion of the building’s steel structure. The new Children’s Hospital of Michigan project is the final phase of the DMC’s $500 million dollar capital improvement program encompassing 15 projects on campuses throughout its system of hospitals.
Plante Moran Cresa has worked closely with DMC facilities staff on this project since 2010, when we were engaged to develop a master schedule during the initial programming and design and lead in the procurement of professional services. Now acting as owner’s representative providing project management services, PMC is part of the development team that includes design team Shepley Bulfinch and Peter Basso Associates Inc. in addition to L.S. Brinker Company and Barton Malow Company in a joint venture as construction manager. Plante Moran Cresa Vice President Bob Ruprich is lead project manager on the project.
The new Children’s Hospital of Michigan project officially broke ground on August 25, 2015, after approximately six months of preparatory work relocating services, erecting alternative entrances, and creating new pathways that would ensure the development process runs smoothly while the hospital maintains all of its services throughout construction.
The six-story, 248,800-square-foot tower will house an emergency department at the ground level, radiology department on the first floor, expanded surgery department on the second floor, and a neonatal intensive care unit with 35 private bedrooms on the third floor. The fourth and fifth floors will be dedicated pediatric intensive care units, each with 24 private beds. The new spaces, along with the entrance and lobby renovation, will incorporate the latest technologies and a facility design that will both improve the patient experience and enable staff to deliver the best possible care more efficiently.
The new Children’s Hospital of Michigan is scheduled to open in February of 2017 and will be followed by another 10 months of renovation and the construction of a new main lobby. The entire project is scheduled to be complete at the end of 2017. The $155 million program has a construction budget of just over $100 million.
